UNSUSTAINABLE: Modern housing developments across Australia are continuing to create Urban Heat Islands and the SA Government is actually driving this housing model with bulk build developers pushing hotter homes.

We undertook a thermal study of a new development promoted by the SA Housing Trust in Munno Para. The northern suburbs of Adelaide is exploding in development but not much consideration into future sustainable planning around cool materials and urban planning.

Building houses is critical, but making smart decisions on thermal built materials is even more critical as part of future planning. According to the Climate Council by 2090 the region will increase by 12 days above 35 degrees based on existing action. By 2050 (just 25 years) it will increase by 8 days above 35 degrees with hotter nights.

While the SA Government, Premier Peter Malinauskas and Housing Minister Nick Champion release statements regarding the need for light-coloured roofs in the northern suburbs https://www.premier.sa.gov.au/media-r... the developments aren't actually mandating this. With blocks in this new estate around $585,000, the unfortunate occupants are buying a hotter future with alarmingly dangerous synthetic grass backyards and inefficient solar systems that will rely on outdated NCC standards which don't take into consideration future heat development. Bulk insulation R-values just can't cope with this kind of heat!

Regrettably this is common across Australia. Solutions are available starting with lighter colours then advance thermal insulation protection at the envelope of buildings. The recent City of Adelaide Cool Roof Trial https://d31atr86jnqrq2.cloudfront.net... in the Adelaide parklands showed that some specialised insulation coatings like Super Therm® won't contribute to the Urban Heat Island keeping you cool.
