=============================================================

The current Stockport station was first opened on 15 February 1843 by the Manchester and Birmingham Railway and became the town's principal railway station. Its original name was 'Edgeley', after one of the town's nearby suburbs, as there was another Stockport station which existed since 1840, located on the other side of Stockport Viaduct.

In 1960, the line from Crewe, through Stockport, to Manchester Piccadilly was electrified as part of the 1955 Modernisation plan and electric express services to Birmingham and London began operating.

On 6 May 1968, the station as renamed, simply, to 'Stockport' and is currently served by six different operators operating both local and inter-city services, though many of these services are still operated by diesel traction.
