What are brainwaves?
The brain is the primary component of the nervous system, occupying the cranial cavity. The brain weighs an average of three pounds, comprising of about 97% of the entire central nervous system. It utilizes almost 50% of all of your body's blood glucose. It utilizes all of this glucose to create electrochemical energy, or simply electricity, to enable your brain to carry out all of its functions, including learning and emotional regulation, and is responsible for issuing nerve impulses, processing nerve impulse data, and engaging in the higher order of thought processes.
Research has demonstrated that the left and right hemispheres are not identical; in fact they seem to control different aspects of thought. The left-brain hemisphere is responsible for much of the higher thought processes, which are related with analysis and speech, whereas the right hemisphere appears to be responsible for more artistic thought processes, such as imagination and visual pattern recognition. Hence one who is particularly good at mathematics, logic, and science often is said, to be left brain influenced, and similarly, artists, musicians, and writers are considered to be right brain influenced.
Containing about a trillion neurons, the human brain is the most complex mechanism known, and its many functions continue to be both a source of amazement and a focus of much research.
...The electrical energy can be recorded in the form of brainwaves by placing electrodes (sensors) on the head. Slow brainwaves reflect the brain is under-aroused or functioning at reduced capacity for mental efficiency. This occurs during sleep and daydreaming. When your brain is producing predominately fast brainwaves, it is more fully aroused; we are alert, focused, and the network of neurons in the brain are engaged to process information. The faster brainwaves need to be dominate for controlling attention, behavior, emotions, and learning. If one is producing too much of the slow brainwaves or too few of the fast brainwaves, then the brain will be operating at reduced capacity.
Researchers have been able to further identify the various frequencies associated with different states of mind such as; stress, anxiety, phobias, depression, insomnia, substance abuse, chronic pain, etc.
Researchers have also found that they can stimulate the brainwaves to change a person's mental state and even treat a variety of mental disorders.
When the brain receives a stimulus through the eyes, ears or other senses it emits an electrical charge in response, called a cortical evoked response. When repeated over a period of four to six minutes, the brain becomes entrained (called brainwave entrainment or BWE) to the frequency of the stimulus.
