A food safety scare has erupted in Europe after insecticide-tainted eggs were found to have been put out to market.
The issue first began in Belgium, spreading to Germany, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands, where millions of chickens could be culled and millions of eggs are being pulled from shelves.
Belgium said it was aware that eggs had been contaminated with fipronil, a substance potentially dangerous to humans, since June, and the country's agriculture minister has ordered a full report by Tuesday on why the food agency failed to notify neighboring countries.
Meanwhile, contaminated eggs are known to have entered the UK and France, but the British Food Standards Agency said the number of eggs involved is very small and the risk to public health is very low.
London and Paris, however, have still opened investigations into the matter.
