In this 2005 archival clip from WNET’s “New York Voices” program, we hear from influential theater voices on the cultural impact of The Public Theater in New York City 50 years after its founding in 1954 by visionary theater director, Joseph Papp.

The Public Theater was one of the nation’s first nonprofit theaters and has remained a champion for making art and theater for everyone.

55 of The Public's productions went on to have success in Broadway theaters after their Astor Place runs, including its very first production- Hair (1967); and other hits - A Chorus Line (1975), Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk (1995), and Hamilton (2015).

The Public's current leaders, Artistic Director Oskar Eustis, and Executive Director Patrick Willingham, run seasonal programming at its homebase - Astor Place, free Shakespeare in the Park performances at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, Joe’s Pub, and several other traveling projects and programs.

Hear from theater greats in this archival gem, including: George C. Wolfe, Artistic Director of The Public Theater from 1993–2004); its current Artistic Director Oskar Eustis; Playwright Tony Kushner; and legendary New York Times essayist, Frank Rich.
