Hey gang, Cyril here. I want to start out by wishing everybody a happy holidays, especially if you're gearing up to celebrate Thanksgiving in a few hours. That's actually one of the reasons why I'm making this video.
You see, we have a tradition here at Defunct Games of doing a themed holiday series that runs through Christmas. This started a long time ago, when we reviewed classic collectibles and determined if they were worth keeping around. This grew into a year where we talked about genres, silly game cliches, classic controllers and even the most memorable bonus stages.
A few years ago, we decided to transition from daily written articles to short videos. For example, last year we spend November and December covering dozens of 8- and 16-bit endings, which is the series that eventually became Game Over: The Early Years. In other years we posted videos about ridiculous retro rumors, classic magazine retrospectives and dangerous cheat codes.
The reason I bring all this up is because tomorrow is Thanksgiving, and that means our daily holiday series is about to begin. So let me tell you about our plans and how it's going to differ from years past. Let's start with the good news, we are once again going to do a holiday series, and the theme is classic video game award shows.
This is actually something I've been wanting to do since launching our Electronic Gaming Monthly Best and Worst series a year ago. As much fun as it is to look at the reviews, one of my favorite things about old EGM is the awards shows at the end of the year. They always cover so much ground and are all over the place. They are an absolute trip looking back at them now. My hope for this series is to recreate these magazine awards shows from the 80s and 90s as a fun video experience. Basically like a bunch of mini-Oscars.
One of the reasons I decided to do this is because there are two different video game awards shows scheduled for this December, so I figured this might be the perfect time to completely oversaturate the market. My goal is to show the absurdity of these types of shows by poking fun of the televised events while honoring the prizes handed out by EGM. I think it's a fun idea, and I hope you'll agree.
The truth is, this could all turn out terribly. Due to weeks of computer issues, I'm about as far behind on this project as one could possibly be. I don't even have tomorrow's episode fully produced, which means I'm flying by the seat of my pants here. This is an ambitious idea that could either be a whole lot of fun, or a terrible train wreck. I honestly don't know yet, and that's both scary and exhilarating.
Because of the scope of the series, I've decided that there's absolutely no way I can commit to publishing daily episodes of this Best and Worst Awards Show. While that's a big change from past years, I think it's for the best. The plan is to post two episodes a week, one on Tuesdays and another on Thursdays. And instead of running through Christmas Day, we're going to go until the end of the year, which adds one extra episode. The cool thing is that each episode is about three times longer than what we've done in other years, so you're actually getting about the same amount of content.
And because these episodes are only running two times a week, this will mean you'll get new episodes of Game Over on Mondays, new reviews throughout the week and new episodes of the Mailbag on Fridays. This should help balance out the schedule between the awards shows and the usual content. Best of all, our holiday feature won't be as overwhelming as past years, where you were bombarded with the same types of videos every single day.
So to recap: We'll be debuting the first episode of the Electronic Gaming Monthly Best & Worst Awards Show tomorrow, followed by new episodes every Tuesday and Thursday through the end of the year. That's 11 episodes that will take us from 1989 to 1999. We will also continue our Game Over series, along with the reviews and everything else you like about Defunct Games. Expect a lot of crazy categories, baffling decisions and dumb jokes. Lots of dumb jokes. You'll see what I mean.
I hope you enjoy these awards shows as much as I enjoyed making them, but I'm fully ready for this whole thing to blow up in my face. I guess you'll have a chance to decide tomorrow if it's good or bad. See you tomorrow.
