1. The Northern Resident orca population is estimated to be around 341 individuals as of 2022.

2. Unlike other orcas, the Northern residents are inshore fish-eating orcas who have a preference for salmon, especially Chinook. They are known to share their catches with their pod members.

3. Northern resident orcas stay with their mothers, siblings, and offspring for their entire lives, forming close-knit family units.

4. Mating between different Northern Resident matrilines can occur, but ultimately, males live with their own family, and females leave the pod and start a matriline on their own. Female orcas (grandmother’s and /or mothers lead the pod).

5. Each matriline in the Northern Resident orca population has its own unique vocalizations, which helps in determining the degree of relatedness and prevents inbreeding.

6. The Northern resident orcas, along with a few families of resident type orcas in Alaska, are the only ones known to have the cultural behavior of rubbing on smooth, stone beaches.
