Sozopol: Bulgaria | Old Town & Beach

Описание к видео Sozopol: Bulgaria | Old Town & Beach

In today's video the travel turtles visit Sozopol, Bulgaria including the old town parts of the new town and beach. This is another beautiful ancient town in Bulgaria, one of the oldest on the Black Sea cost dating back to the bronze age.

Founded in the 7th century BC by Greek colonists as Anthea, the town was an important naval and trade centre for many centuries. Its name was changed to Apollonia after a temple to the God Apollo was erected in the town. When the town came under the influence of the Byzantine empire its name was changed to Sozopoli meaning "city of salvation ".

Around the turn of the first millennium, the town fell to the Turks and its influence declined, reverting back to little more than a fishing village. In the 19th century, many of the town's population fled to Russia to avoid retaliation by the Turks after the Russio-Turkish war and it remained deserted for several decades before being resettled by Turks, Bulgarians and Greeks.

Communist influence in the 1950s promoted Sozopol as a tourist destination although it took until the 1990s before the town became a holiday resort in its own right with mainly German and Russian tourists holidaying there.
