On episode 12 of the Chinese Food Series, we visited Songhai at Waterloo Street, one of Kolkata’s oldest Chinese restaurants with a legacy dating back to the early 1950s. It has been a cherished destination across generations – from grandparents to grandchildren.

In its early years, Songhai was a popular lunch spot for British-Indian bureaucrats, lawyers, and office-goers in Dalhousie. The space still holds on to its original charm with the red lanterns, Kori Borga or wooden panels supported ceiling and that unmistakable old Calcutta Restaurant feel.

Many Calcutta folks first fell in love with Chinese food at this place and they still swear by it.
The flavours here have remained consistent, resisting modern reinvention to protect their heritage. Signature dishes like Drums of Heaven and Bamboo Fish are still made the same way they were decades ago.
