Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease affects between 1 in 500 and 1 in 1000 births. It is the commonest type of cystic kidney disease in adults. Most are caused by PKD1 gene mutation on chromosome 16p, around 15% are caused by PKD2 gene mutation and 10% of cases are new mutations with no family history.
