Daizan addresses a great question from James about whether a lay person can become a Zen master. The short answer is absolutely yes. Although he and his late teacher in Japan, Shinzan Roshi, came from a monastic background, they have both chosen to concentrated on Zaike Bukkyō (lay Buddhism). When Shinzan Roshi gave the opening talk for our dojo in London, he said he was expecting the Zen masters of future to come from this dojo - from our lay community. And within the modern lay practising community in Japan there are a number of communities, such as Ningen Zen Kyodan and Sanbo Zen, that are headed up by accomplished lay Roshis (Zen Masters).
