The Greater Kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros) is a large antelope with the twisted-horned males standing up to 1.5 metres (60 inches) at the shoulder and weighing up to 340 kilograms (750 pounds). Kudus such as these ones are often found in bachelor groups and are relatively peaceful, and pairs of young male Kudus sometimes ‘play-fight’ to test each other’s strength. Sometimes fighting males lock horns and are unable to separate – they then die of starvation or dehydration. Kudus are browsers eating the leaves of shrubs and sometimes lilies. These two young male Kudus were play-fighting quite gently, locking their twisted horns and then separating before re-engaging again. Other Kudus and Impalas nearby took no notice and just continued to browse on shrubs in the dry bed of the Bume River in Kruger Park South Africa.
