Cleaning vs. Refinishing

While we definitely want to give newly acquired antique wood furniture a proper cleaning, refinishing might not be the next step. Despite the fact that your furniture might have certain imperfections like scratches or dents, along with a healthy layer of shellack you probably should think twice before refinishing anything. By doing so, you may actually diminish the value of the piece so better to focus on how to get it clean:

● Using denatured alcohol and some cheesecloth, remove any dirt, old wax, and oils from the furniture
● Scrub surface with some steel wool (always work with the grain of the wood)
● Polish the newly clean furniture with shellac via a cheesecloth pad with some alcohol on it

For the adventurous, you can even make your own shellac by adding denatured alcohol to some orange flake shellac… let the alcohol dissolve and put the solution into a squeeze bottle for use later.

The final step is to apply some furniture wax which will protect and seal the piece from water damage.
