As this year's hurricane season draws near, Deputy Director of the Barbados Meteorological Services, Brian Murray, urges Barbadians to be prepared.

He says the official forecast for the season will be presented at the Department of Emergency Management's headquarters on May 30th.

However, Mr. Murray says, according to projections from Colorado State University, there will be 17 named storms, of which nine are expected to become hurricanes.

Of those nine hurricanes, four are set to become major weather occurrences, of category three or higher.

Mr. Murray adds that even though the projected number of hurricanes is fewer than in 2024, people must be mindful that over the past two years, Barbados has been affected by tropical cyclones early in the season, as was the case with Hurricane Elsa in 2021, Tropical Storm Bret in 2023, and Major Hurricane Beryl in 2024.
