Original song credited to Gene Raskin, who put a new English lyric to the Russian romance song "Дорогой длинною" (literally "By the long road"), composed by Boris Fomin (1900–1948) with words by the poet Konstantin Podrevsky.
The most popular version of this song was performed by Mary Hopkin and produced by Paul McCartney for Apple Records. It was released in 1968, achieving notorious worldwide success.
The Spanish version was adapted and performed by Jose Guardiola, also released in 1968.
