(fun translation note: if you've seen an early version of my TL for this, chances are I translated "gamushara ni" ("Do or die") differently. That was a surprisingly tricky one to translate in context. The literal meaning is pretty straightforward: Recklessly, in a "don't look before you leap" sort of way. But you can't have an adverb be the soul of a song in English in the way that "gamushara ni" is here (welcome to "translation is an art" 101), and so I wound up struggling for a really long time with how to handle it. "Fuck it" is maybe the closest in spirit, but the idea of putting a hundred f-bombs into a Maeda work is instinctively repugnant. My job is to say "what would the words have been if Maeda had been writing in English?" and "tons of profanity" is just not the answer. For a while I went with "screw it," but the minced oath made it all feel, well, minced. Eventually I settled on "do or die." I'm not 100% happy with it, in no small part because the literal meaning is pretty far removed from "reckless abandon." And yet, it feels like it slots into place like a piece in a jigsaw puzzle, so here we are.)
