The vibrant religious festivals of Maskal and Demera were observed nationwide this afternoon. Demera, the eve of Maskal, is an annual celebration by followers of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, commemorating the arrival of a segment of the "True Cross" on which Christ was crucified. In the capital city, the festivities commenced this afternoon at Maskal Square, with the distinguished presence of the visiting Indian President.

The highlight of the ceremony was a procession featuring torches and flares, symbolizing the discovery of the "True Cross." Participants in the parade included members of the Ministry of the Imperial Court, representatives from the city's districts, the Territorial Army, Police, Finance, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Imperial Body Guard.

The event at Maskal Square featured film screenings, performances, and a gathering of clergy. The arrival of the Patriarch Abuna Theophilos, attired in black ecclesiastical attire, was a significant moment. Priests chanted and performed their religious duties.

Emperor Haile Selassie and the visiting Indian President arrived in an open vehicle and were welcomed by Abuna Theophilos. The Emperor venerated the Cross, and the clergy chanted and sang hymns. The Patriarch then blessed the Holy Bible. Following the ceremony with the "Demera," the Patriarch, along with the priests, presented the Holy Bible to the Emperor. Subsequently, the Indian President and his wife also kissed the Holy Bible. The Emperor ignited the Demera, and in front of them, the Emperor and the President led the torch and flare procession. The event concluded with a press briefing.
