(27 Jan 2020) Presidential candidates have swarmed Iowa's rolling landscape for more than a year, making their pitch to potential supporters on campuses, county fairgrounds and in high school gymnasiums.
But a week before the caucuses usher in the Democratic contest, the battle for the state is wide open.
A cluster of candidates, including Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, along with former Vice President Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, enters the final stretch with a plausible chance of winning Iowa's caucuses.
For two decades, Iowa has had a solid record of backing the ultimate Democratic nominee. A clear victory in its caucuses next month could set the tone for the races that follow in New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina.
But an inconclusive result or one in which several candidates are bunched together near the top could preview a long, brutal fight ahead.
"We know for a fact that the outcome of the Iowa caucus does influence the assessment of voters around the country," said Rachel Paine Caufield, a political science professor at Drake University in Des Moines.
The Midwestern, mainly white segment of Democratic voters who participate doesn't generally reflect its counterparts nationally. And the state's caucuses are confusing to some.
Still, Iowans take great pride in their first-in-the-nation nominating contests.
"It's an important obligation and a duty that at least the fellow Iowans that I know take very seriously," Perry, Iowa, resident Dan Spellman said during a visit to a coffee shop in town.
Spellman, an attorney, and his wife, Sally, visited the Perry Perk café on a recent snowy day.
"I have relatives in other states who haven't kept track of anybody. They're not ready. And we're all dug in," Sally Spellman said.
With the race as close as it appears to be, the leading candidates and their surrogates will continue to criss-cross the state, practicing the retail politics that makes campaigning in Iowa so unique.
"I think it's really neat that they're coming around telling us their points of views and stuff," said Larry Shaver, a custodian at a middle school in Newton that hosted a Sanders rally.
