The Song of the Blind Gril pokes fun at the faith healer Joseph Weissenberg (1855-1941), whose healing method involved application of white cream cheese, followed by prayer.

Kurt Weill wrote this song for Lotte Lenya to sing (world premiere November 17th, 1931) as part of the Red Revue, put on by theater company of young actors committed to provocative leftist repertoire.

Weissenberg fails to heal the young blind girl (the song is sung in her voice) with his trademark method, but no matter: given the state of the world, best not to see but rather follow blindly. The young girl then prays that all should have their eyes shut with cheese so as not to witness the awful goings-on. Of note: Weissenberg later encouraged his more than 100 000 congregants to vote to Hitler.
