Celebrated Viol quartet Parthenia performs Saltarello, composed by Giovanni Cavaccio, at the Closing Reception to Artists Need to Create on the Same Scale that Society has the Capacity to Destroy: Mare Nostrum, part of the 58th Biennale d’Arte di Venezia, presented by the Brooklyn Rail.

Parthina performed an hour of early music for the viola da gamba by Claudio Monteverdi (1567 –1543), Philippe Verdelot (c. 1470 –1542), Andrea Gabrieli (1542 –1585), and Nicolò Corradini (1585-1646) among others, as well as a contemporary composition by Lucille M. Jones (b. 1955) addressing the urgency of the environmental crisis based on data about Earth's global warming and climate change. November 25th, 2019.

Parthenia is a viol or vila da gamba quartet that brings early music into the present with a ravishing sound and a remarkable sense of ensemble, animating both ancient and fresh-commissioned repertoire to critical acclaim. Parthenia is Beverly Au, Lawrence Lipnik, Rosamund Morley and Lisa Terry. The ensemble appears regularly in concerts across America, and produces its own series in New York City, collaborating with the world’s foremost early music specialists. The quartet has performed at such wide-ranging venues as Music Before 1800 festival, the Harriman-Jewell Series, the Pierpont Morgan Library, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale Center for British Art, Columbia University’s Miller Theatre, among others. Their performances range from its popular touring program, When Music & Sweet Poetry Agree, a celebration of Elizabethan poetry and music with actor Paul Hecht, to the complete viol fantasies of Henry Purcell, to Al Naharot Bavel which features works by Jewish Renaissance composers. Parthenia also commissions and premieres new works annually.
