(9 Apr 2018) The UN human rights office on Monday warned of the dangers of an "impotent" international response to the possible use of chemical weapons in Syria over the weekend.
Rupert Colville, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said there was a lack of information about the purported chemical weapons attack in rebel-held Douma on Saturday, but pointed to nearly three dozen chemical attacks in Syria since the country ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention 4-1/2 years ago.
"Chemical attacks appear to becoming normalised in Syria and they are happening with great frequency," he said, while denouncing the "impotent response by the world's great powers, all of whom are involved in Syria."
A total of 192 states have ratified the agreement that prohibits use of chemical weapons, making it one of the most universally accepted conventions.
Opposition activists said 40 people died in the chemical attack late Saturday in the suburbs of the Syrian capital and blamed it on the Syrian government.
The Russian military says it has surveyed the Syrian town of Douma and found no trace of chemical weapons use there.
