Essentially you can use your valve locator to trace anything the is metal. Sometimes it does not work all that great when you are using it to locate things that it is not meant for, but a lot of times it will still work good enough, and at least give you an idea of where a line might be running. Here I tied onto this electrical caution tape that had a metal strip in it and traced it just like I would an irrigation wire. It worked pretty good. I was able to find where it went so I wouldn't cut it when I ditched across it. A valve locator is a must have tool for an irrigator and I would highly recommend any one that is planning on being in the business to get one.
