X-wing fighter
Starting off our list with a recent sale is the x wing fighter from the original new hope movie set. The 20-inch model utilized in the pivotal battle scene in A New Hope was long thought to be lost. However,l it was eventually found in a cardboard box filled with packing peanuts in the garage of Greg Jein, an Oscar-nominated model maker, who passed away in May 2022. Fetching an eye watering 3.1 million dollars, it is the most expensive star wars item ever sold at auction.
Skywalkers saber $450k (2017) used in new hope and empire strikes back
Mark Hamill's lightsaber from A New Hope and "The Empire Strikes Back" also fetched another out of this world price. The iconic weapon, integral to the Star Wars saga and emblematic of the Jedi and Sith's close combat, was once part of producer Gary Kurtz's collection. It was purchased by the Orlando-based Ripley company for 450,000 dollars in 2017. Han Solo's blaster, a modified and deactivated Mauser pistol capable of firing only blanks, stands as one of the most iconic weapons in the Star Wars saga. The Rock Island Auction Company has stated it to be the sole survivor among the original trio of blasters crafted for the 1976 movie. Initially valued between $300,000 and $500,000, Solo's blaster shattered expectations by fetching $1 million in a 2022 auction. This remarkable sale price established Solo's blaster as the priciest movie firearm ever sold, surpassing the previous record held by James Bond's Walther LP53 which sold for $437,000 in 2010.
R2d2 $2.7 million (1977 movie, sold 2017)
Constructed from aluminum, steel, and fiberglass, this R2-D2 is touted as the only complete unit available in the public domain, making it a highly unique and instantly recognizable icon of pop culture. The dome part of the droid, which dates back to the original 1977 film, was used by actor Kenny Baker. Standing 43 inches tall, rdr2 was pieced together using components from the original "Star Wars" trilogy, The Phantom Menace", and Attack of the Clones. Before the auction, Profiles in History estimated the droid would sell for between $1 million and $2 million dollars. In reality this undervalued the iconic robot, with it going on to sell for $2.75 million in 2017.
Vaders helmet 900k (2019)
The helmet of Darth Vader, crafted from fiberglass and originally estimated to garner around $500,000 dollars, ignited a competitive bidding war among collectors of movie memorabilia in 2019, dramatically elevating its final sale price. After including all associated fees, the final purchase amounted to over $900,000 dollars, allowing the buyer to secure a piece of the infamous villain in movie history.
C3po 800k
In a dazzling auction the iconic head of C-3PO featured in A New Hope fetched an impressive sum. As revealed by the BBC, Anthony Daniels, the esteemed actor behind C-3PO, chose this moment to part with his cherished collection from the Star Wars saga. This treasure trove not only included the remarkable head of C-3PO but also other fragments of the beloved droid, original scripts, and even remnants of the Millennium Falcon that he’d heroically rescued from destruction after the Return of the Jedi." In total, C-3PO’s head sold for a price exceeding $800,000 in November 2023.
Star wars first camera 625k (new hope, 2011)
The iconic Panavision PSR 35 millimetre camera used by Lucas in a new hope was sold as part of Debbie Reynolds' vast collection after her museum plans fell through, setting new highs for vintage Hollywood cameras at a Beverly Hills auction. This piece of cinematic history not only came with a photo of George Lucas using it on set but also included rare Panavision paperwork allowing private ownership. Other vintage cameras at the auction, including those used in "2001: A Space Odyssey", didn't come close to the Lucas camera's appeal. Ultimately, the sale shattered auction records, fetching a groundbreaking $625,000 dollars in 2011.
