BMW has shown a concept for its upcoming 8 Series Coupe. This flagship model pays homage to the 8 Series Coupe from the 1990s, blending both luxury and sportiness in a swoopy GT package. This model is expected to be released in 2018 where it will compete against the likes of the Mercedes S-Class Coupe and the Lexus LC.

This two-door coupe features an aggressive exterior design with a long sloping hood complete with a muscular power bulge and twin kidney grilles flanked by angular laser headlights. Down the side of the car, large wheelarches hide 21-inch alloy wheels. The car’s rear features a long sloping window flowing into a short bootlid featuring a small integrated spoiler, wrap-around brakelights, and trapezoid exhaust tips.

2018 BMW 8 Series interior

The interior blends some familiar BMW design elements with some new ones. There are lashings of carbon fibre, diamond stitched leather sports seats, a large sporty steering wheel, BMW’s iDrive infotainment system and a digital gauge cluster – replacing traditional analogue gauges.

2018 BMW 8 Series engines

Entry-level 8 Series models could come with a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine but the majority of sales will probably be more powerful 3.0-litre petrol and diesel versions. Those looking for a bit more oomph should be able to pick either an eight-cylinder engine or a range-topping 6.6-litre twin-turbocharged V12. A high-performance M8 variant could be released further down the car’s lifeline, rivalling the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe. Models could also be offered with BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a plug-in hybrid model could also be developed.

2018 BMW 8 Series price and release date

A production-ready model could make its debut later at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show. Being the firm’s flagship coupe, we expect entry-level models to demand at least £70,000 while top-spec models could set you back more than £100,000.
