In northern Maine, there are ten million acres of continuous bird habitat. The Maine woods are so dark at night that the birds can use the stars to navigate and there are many safe places for them to land. Light and dark cycles are critically important components of birds' annual rhythms and the annual rhythms of every species on the landscape. If night and day cycles get confused by artificial light, it can be harder for birds and other animals to find their way and attune their seasonal clocks the way they are evolved to do so.

Birds can give us so much information about the environment. They are a great indicator species giving us insight into the overall health of the forest and the landscape.
