Описание к видео youth - daughter // slowed {with lyrics}

Song meaning:

A lot of young people think they’re in love and it often doesn’t go as planned. Daughter describes the ending of a toxic relationship, but she is still feeling the effects. With symbolism like “From the perfect start to the finish line” and “Setting fire to our insides”, one assumes that the title is fitting as many young people turn to exercise (not often) or more obviously drugs to help heal the pain. The person she broke up with is to blame as we see from the lyrics. Daughter lets us know that a lot of people have truly been hurt and just give up, so if you’re still going, even after being hurt, you’re lucky! The theme of self-destruction is evident.

'Shadows settle on the place that you left our minds are troubled by the emptiness' - Someone is gone: they may be dead or simply far away from the singer. Shadows represent how the person’s presence is still there but intangible, a mere silhouette of their existence. Shadows are also eerie and symbolise fear, sadness, etc.

'Destroy the middle, it's a waste of time' - She perceives their relationship, or relationships in general, as pointless in the long run, focusing on only the happy beginning and the bitter end. This also implies that she has analysed it from start to end and found the middle riddled with lies and deception that led to its breakdown.

'And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones' - Breathing and bleeding represent living. Even if your life seems to be bad at the moment, just be glad that you are alive. Alternatively, she may be commenting on the nature of youth in general, saying to an audience that it’s a miracle they’re still energetic and lively.

'Setting fire to our insides for fun' - This line plays off the smoking imagery of the preceding line. By filling their bodies with smoke, their are quite literally setting their insides on fire for fun. Elena suggests that we get intimately involved with all the wrong people, we hurt our hearts in search of what/who we think we need in our lives. We hurt ourselves emotionally over and over again because at the end of it all, we still find it exciting.

'We are the reckless, we are the wild youth chasing visions of our futures one day, we'll reveal the truth that one will die before he gets there' - It’s this brave and “reckless” feeling you have as you’re young, this feeling of being able to do anything but still searching for your future, of who you’ll marry, what job you’ll have and so on. This is really common among the young, to wanna plan out the future, but the last line reverse this; saying that you won’t have a future cause you’ll die before you get there. This could also talk about the young reckless person in you dying and never experiencing the future cause you are forced to grow up when you become an adult and therefor you’ll “die”, before you get there, leaving the reckless, wild youth behind.

''Cause most of our feelings, they are dead and they are gone' - This could refer to how we all leave some of our feelings in the youth, cause it’s not as acceptable to feel bad or be mad and lash out once you grow up and therefor we are killing our feelings when we’re growing up.

'Collecting pictures from a flood that wrecked our home it was a flood that wrecked this home and you caused it' - “Collecting pictures” is memories from their past that remain in Elena’s mind. Flood is the symbolising the “extra feelings” Elena’s partner had that ruined their relationship. Thus making the other person, the culprit of their separation.
