The Rocket was designed and built by Robert Stephenson in 1829,
for the Liverpool and Manchester railways competition known as the Rainhill trials.
it was the first to bring together a multi-tubular boiler with a separate jacketed firebox
The locomotives Boiler was 3 feet 4 inches in diameter and 6 foot long.
To which it was fitted with Twenty five 3 inch copper tubes.
The main driving wheels were 4 foot 8 and a half inches in Diameter.
The trailing wheels were 2 foot 6 inches in diameter.
but on the day of the race these did not fit so were substituted with wagon wheels 2 foot 8 and a half inches in diameter.
The locomotive through its working life had been involved in several accidents. Each time the opportunity was taken to improve the engine resulting in the cylinders being lowered to 8 degrees. A smoke box was also fitted to make cleaning ash and soot from the boiler much easier, this model is based on the Crewe drawing of how the engine looked in 1835
