Rembrandt his techniques 🎨Painting a detail of LUCRETIA part 1

Описание к видео Rembrandt his techniques 🎨Painting a detail of LUCRETIA part 1

Do you also want to learn to paint like Rembrandt and what is Rembrandt's painting technique? A good method to investigate the painting technique of the Old Master Rembrandt is to copy a painting. I'm going to paint a small detail from the painting 'Lucretia'.
A video podcast from my studio, because the studio is closed to students due to the Corona policy, I still want to offer you something. Hence the start with the two video podcasts painting lessons about painting Lucretia.

How to learn to PAIN LIKE REMBRANDT

I'll start with 'Lucretia' from 1666. It is one of Rembrandts his later works. He painted her twice.

Lucretia is a Roman woman who was known for her beauty and her chastity. When her husband was away for a long time due to war, she remained faithful to him, unlike many other Roman soldiers' wives. However, when she was dishonored by the king's son, she committed suicide with a knife in front of her father and husband.

IMPRIMATURA
I apply a layer of color with red ocher on the prepared linen cloth; an imprimatura.

CHALK DRAWING and GRISAILLE PAINTING
This is followed by the chalk drawing. This is set up roughly. Followed by the underpainting 'painting with the two colors Titanium White and Burnt Umber.

After the GRISAILLE painting, the color underpainting follows. In these layers I use a paint thickened with rock chalk, a kind of putty. To add more structure to the paint stroke. The recipe follows in part 2 of Painting 'Lucretia' (Rembrandt).

Recept Impasto:    • Rembrandt his IMPASTO 🎨 Painting deta...

I paint with the colors layer by layer; Titanium White, Burnt Umber, Naples Yellow, Raw Umber, Phthalo Blue, Flesh Ocher and Transparent Yellow. In the first layers I use the paint straight from the tube, or slightly diluted, and in the later layers I add linseed oil.
NB! Phthalo blue is a very strong color, you only need very little.

I always let the canvas dry behind the window between the painting layers. Preferably in the sun.

GLAZE LAYERS
I paint many layers of glazing, by applying thin layers of transparent paint, diluted with linseed oil. This technique was often used by the master painters to build a depth of color in their paintings

IMPASTO BY REMBRANDT.
In part #2 I prepare the canvas and create the Impasto that Rembrandt used.
