3. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Li Weiyi, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson for the Chinese State Council:
"The results of the recent Taiwan election showed it is the Taiwanese people's will to expect a stable society, developing economy and peaceful cross-strait relations. Regarding predictions, we have to wait and see. We have noted that the Taiwanese administration leader has not given up the attempt to destroy cross strait relations and increase tension by conducting a second phase of changes to the constitution. Such move is against the fundamental will of the people on both sides, and is biggest threat to the peace and stability of Taiwan strait and the Pacific area. Compatriots on both sides have to be alert to such a move."

STORY LINE:

The Chinese government on Wednesday called the results of the recent democratic elections in Taiwan the "people's will", as the pro-independence Nationalist Party made significant gains.

In the lower house elections in Taiwan, the ruling party, the DPP, headed by Taiwan's President Chen Shui-bian, won only six of the 23 mayoral and county executive seats in the December 3 vote, while the opposition Nationalist Party grabbed 14 and its allies won three more.

Speaking in a regular news conference, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office said the "The results of the recent Taiwan election show the Taiwanese people expect a stable society, developing economy and peaceful cross-strait relations."

But at the same time, the Taiwan administration is still regarded with suspicion in their attempts to modify Taiwan's constitution.

The Chinese government went on to deny the rumours that the Taiwan compatriot ID will be replaced with an ID for "Taiwan province".

While discussing the so-called 'panda diplomacy', Li Weiyi also told reporters that the experts were pleased with the progress. They said more information would be forthcoming about the timings for the pandas to be sent to Taiwan.

Also on Wednesday, negotiations were underway for the charter flight arrangement between mainland and Taiwan during upcoming Chinese New Year.

Direct air links between China and Taiwan ended when the two sides split more than five decades ago, but both sides allowed charter flights in 2003 and 2005 for Taiwanese business people in China wishing to return home for the Lunar New Year.

For the next holiday, Taiwanese students and tourists will also be allowed to take the flights.

Taiwan opposes regular commercial flights, ostensibly for security reasons. China still claims sovereignty over the self-ruled island, and threatens to use force should Taipei move toward formal independence.
