For his second season as an SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain explores the profound impact of jazz on some of India’s greatest musicians working within the genre, joined by a staggering lineup of guests including legendary bassist and composer Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta, one of the most influential drummers in modern music. Guitarist Sanjay Divecha is best known for his work with vocalist Angelique Kidjo and drummer Dave Weckl, while Darjeeling-born keyboardist and composer Louiz Banks made an international impact with master guitarist John McLaughlin and late producer Bob Belden’s Miles From India project. Award-winning composer and Bollywood playback vocalist Shankar Mahadevan is a veteran of work with Hussain, performing with him in the now legendary east-meets-west ensemble Remember Shakti, also featuring McLaughlin. Since arriving in the Bay Area in 1970 as a celebrated teenage prodigy trained by his legendary father Alla Rakha, Hussain has played an essential role bringing the unsurpassed rhythmic sophistication of North Indian classical music into a diverse array of settings. A pioneer of world music and Indo-jazz fusion, he’s blazed a mind-boggling array of musical trails.
