Exploring the Ancient City of Gaochang | Silk Road Oasis

Join me as we explore the ancient oasis city of Gaochang, also known as Khocho or Qara-Khoja, located on the northern rim of the Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China. Once a bustling trade hub on the historic Silk Road, Gaochang was a major stop for merchants and travelers navigating between East and West.

Key Information:

The City’s History: Founded in the 1st century BC, Gaochang played a key role in Silk Road commerce and served as a military and political center. It was home to many cultures, including Han Chinese, Sogdians, Uyghurs, and Tocharians.

Architectural Ruins: Although partially destroyed in wars during the 14th century, the ruins of palaces, inner and outer city walls, and other structures remain, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of this ancient city.

Cultural Significance: Gaochang was a melting pot of religions and cultures, including Buddhism, Manichaeism, and Christianity. In its later history, it became a center for the Uyghur Kingdom of Qocho, whose rulers sponsored the creation of the nearby Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves.

UNESCO World Heritage: Gaochang is recognized as part of the Silk Roads: Routes Network of Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014.
