Connecting an external microphone to an Android phone isn't exactly a straight-forward thing to do. And it gets a little bit more confusing because external mics don't work with all video recording apps on Android. So in this video I'll explain how to properly connect an external microphone to an Android phone.

I'm using a 3.5mm clip-on mic for this example. And if I just plug it into the headphone jack you probably already know that the mic won't work at all. That's because this mic has the wrong type of plug which only has 3 sections on it. To have this mic work you will need a TRRS adapter like the one from StarTech. It's an inexpensive adapter that allows you to access the input and output connections inside the headphone jack. It looks like an ordinary Y-splitter but it's wired differently internally.

On the TRRS plug it has 4 sections on it which is the key to making the mic work. The other end has ports with headphone and microphone icons on it. So just plug the microphone into the end with the microphone icon. Then plug the TRRS adapter into the phone. You'll have to connect it in this order or the phone might not recognize the mic. The StarTech adapter even has brief instructions on it as a reminder.

And let me just clarify that all Android phones can record audio through the headphone jack with the TRRS adapter. But I've found that the ability to use an external mic during video recording depends on the camera app. On my Google Pixel, external mic functionality during video recording was introduced in version 6.1. Before that, an external mic could only work with audio recording only but not with video on the Pixel. So the only way to know is to try it with your own phone.

And here's some additional tips. If your phone's pre-installed camera app won't record audio during video recording you can try the free Open Camera app from the Google Play store. I've tested it and it definitely works with external mics for video recording. And finally if your Android phone doesn't have a headphone jack then you'll need this inexpensive USB-C to 3.5mm adapter in addition to the StarTech TRRS adapter.
