Hi Everybody 😃 I am travelling the length & breadth of New Zealand’s beautiful North & South Islands, visiting the many artisan bakeries that produce so many deliciously different & fantastically creative hand-held pies and sharing my experiences and honest reviews of their pies 🥧🥧🥧

WHAT IS THE STORY BEHIND NEW ZEALAND PIES?

The origins of the pastry-filled pies have been traced back to the Neolithic period, around 6000 BC.

The ancient Egyptians' diet featured basic pies made from oat, wheat, rye, and barley, filled with honey and baked over hot coals. The Greeks used a flour-water paste resembling pie pastry, and filled it with meat. These pies were usually fried or cooked under coals. The Romans adopted the Greek creations, using a variety of meats, oysters, mussels, lampreys, and fish as filling and a mixture of flour, oil, and water for the crust.

Savoury pies were introduced to England by the Romans. They were filled with local meats, including duck, magpie (look at the name!), pigeon & blackbirds (if the nursery rhyme “Four & Twenty Blackbirds Baked In a Pie” has any truth to it!).

The Brits weren’t slow to pick up an affection for pies and this followed them across the world with the British Empire. By 1840 they, along with their tradition of eating pies, had arrived as the first settlers, in far off Aotearoa, New Zealand, as they had already done in Australia.
But no one knew then that on the other side of the world an obsession for pies would develop on a scale never seen before. The Kiwis took the humble meat pie and made it their own, as did our Aussie cousins.
 
Baking pies became an artisan craft with focus on high quality ingredients with premium flavour. Creativity and innovation blossomed in the young island nation with new pie flavours making use of New Zealand’s often unique food products.  

The pies baked today reflect the modern, multicultural society that New Zealand has become. The “Kiwi Pie” (no, we don’t put our protected national iconic bird in a pie!) is inspired by culinary styles from all over the globe and can be found in high quality restaurants, bakeries, cafés, supermarkets & service stations.

The hand-held Kiwi Pie is a New Zealand institution and culinary icon that could be considered NZ’s national dish! 🇳🇿🥰🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧🥧
