STORYLINE:
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo met with their Japanese counterparts Foreign Minister Yoko Kawakami and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Yasutoshi Nishimura.

Both US secretaries emphasized the need to counter economic coercion by state actors and Raimondo thanked her Nishimura for his cooperation on the Indo-Pacific economic framework which was a focal point at the ministerial session earlier in the day.

As the press was leaving the meeting between US and Japanese officials, the emcee of the meeting seemed to open the meeting with the first item of the agenda as “strengthening the rules-based economic order in the Indo-Pacific:
The United States is hosting the annual APEC summit of world leaders this week for the first time since 2011.

The U.S. will be passing the APEC host year responsibilities to Peru as the host of APEC in 2024.

Leaders from the 21-member Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group will gather in San Francisco to talk about how to better spur trade and economic growth across the Pacific region.

But the main summit event will actually be on the sidelines: A face-to-face meeting between President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

This year’s conference is happening against the backdrop of the frosty relationship between China and the U.S. and global turmoil from the Israel-Hamas war and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
