Samsung just rewrote the foldable conversation. After years of skepticism around why anyone would want a phone that bends, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Z Flip 7, and the value-focused Z Flip 7 FE finally provide an answer that’s immediately clear: less weight, less bulk, and more reasons to actually use them. I spent two days testing these devices ahead of Unpacked, diving into Samsung’s engineering changes, poking at AI features, and yes, even saying goodbye to the S Pen.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is all about delivering a real tablet experience without the bulk. It’s now lighter than a Galaxy S25 Ultra and, when closed, just about as thin. Open it up and you’re holding a device barely thicker than a USB-C port. Samsung’s new ArmorFlex hinge is 30% smaller and more durable, which frees up space for a thicker, tougher inner display. This is also the first foldable to get Samsung’s 200 MP camera sensor, and all the usual AI multitasking tricks are on board - including Gemini that floats above your apps for instant answers.

The Z Flip 7, meanwhile, finally feels like a flagship in its own right. The cover display stretches edge to edge at 4.1 inches with a 120 Hz refresh rate and 2,600 nits of brightness. You can run Gemini right on that front screen, making this Flip a pocketable AI assistant. The main camera is now a 50 MP sensor, and you get a bigger battery, waterproofed circuits, and more options for personalization than ever before.

If you want foldable hardware for less than a thousand dollars, the Z Flip 7 FE is the new entry point. It packs a 50 MP camera and most of the AI features of its pricier sibling, only cutting back with a smaller cover display and last year’s Exynos chip. If you’ve been waiting for an affordable way into foldables, this might finally be it.
