Melasma is a chronic condition present in both males and females. it is more common in females and seen mainly on the face especially on the forehead, nose, cheeks and upper lips. The main causes for melasma are genetics, increased sun exposure, hormonal changes, cosmetics containing fragrances, thyroid problem and iron deficiency. The treatment for melasma depend upon the depth of pigmentation- epidermal, dermal or mixed. The therapies for melasma include regular use of sunscreen, creams like hydroquinone, retinoids, tranexemic acid. Oral medication is also effective against melasma. If melasma doesn't respond to creams and tablets, then you can visit the cosmetic centre and opt for in clinic procedures like chemical peel, lasers and injection therapy. Melasma has tendency to recur so a person need to use sunscreen regularly, maintain a healthy lifestyle and take maintainance sessions as advised by the dermatologist.
