In the Sub-Carpathian region of Buzau county, mud volcanoes occur due to gas emanations and fault zones which make the area muddy. The gas erupting from the depth of 3 km through the underground layers of clayand water, emerges as bubbles in small craters. Once the mud overflows through the mouths of the volcanoes it dries and creates conical-shaped structures. Some of these craters are more than 6 m tall. Torrential rains, extensive deforestation, landslides and muddy runoff give the entire area bizzare appearance. It resembles lunar landscape with large
crevasses and mud hollows. The „bloop-bloop“ noise of
the gas bubbles coming up to the surface create an eerie
atmosphere.
