"INTO OUR NATURE" is an endeavour to understand the relationship of 'man' and 'nature' within the environment of the desert; a journey into nature driven by the desire to comprehend the existing ecological balance and the cultural life of the peoples of the desert. But it is also a journey inside us, in search of the true nature of man. Filmed in the desert, it is an excursion of modern man into the heritage of traditional cultures.
The four episodes , each of a duration of 20 minutes, are:
1st Episode: The frontiers of history
2nd Episode: The frontiers of life
3rd Episode: The reproduction of cosmic life
4th Episode: The feast and the return of time.
The idea of the film was conceived by Mrs. Vrinda Dar and Stefano De Santis, two founding members of the Kautilya Society (www.kautilyasociety.com).
The sound track of the film is original, comprised of pieces played and sung by local folk artists of Rajasthan, live recordings of northern classical music, and entirely new compositions. The new compositions were composed by Gerard Valdor (Martinique Islands) in collaboration with Mario Marino (Italy).
The film is presents  through a novel perspective  some of the philosophical problems dealt with in the current debates on ecology. We feel that the questions raised in the film are not only relevant to modern India, but are also very dear to the traditional spirit of Indian civilization. The film is an expression of man's need to comprehend those aspects of tradition which are relevant to modern times but which were left behind in the process of development.
The film portrays a journey of modern man in search of an original identity which is primordial; which is an archetype giving to the human being a nature particular to him before tribal differentiations were created by history. It is a search for the balance of life, within both nature and traditional culture. And it is a search for the original festive spirit of rural societies. The journey of the four characters by car through Rajasthan moves them through the different experiences, stories and observations of the four episodes of the film.
Since we intended to give a perspective that was neither purely Indian nor entirely Western, we have structured the text as a dialogue between four characters: two Indian, one Italian and one American. In the story of the film they make a journey together, revealing to each other their own impressions and thoughts evoked by their encounters with different natural and social environments. This discursive text has also allowed us to talk of some intimate aspects of the local culture, like religious beliefs or traditional family conceptions, without falling into the usual distance of a lecture on the culture of "other" peoples and has permitted us to leave the debated questions open to thought, appealing to the sensibility of the viewers rather than trying to answer it for them. And like anthropological research, this documentary does not end with conclusive judgments, but with an invitation of going into a more thorough research of the relationship between man and nature.
The text was written jointly by Stefano De Santis and Vrinda Dar. The English version of the text was edited by Matthew Rosen.
