During WW2 the US seized millions ($$$) worth of property, currency, copyrights/patents, and art from nationals of enemy countries. Insert the US Office of Alien Property Custodian. The goal of the newly created “APC” was to ensure these assets could not be used by enemies of the US - being Germany, Italy, and Japan. The APC used these assets and often sold them for use in the War Effort against those same countries. For example, German scientific textbooks were copied and sold at a fraction of the cost, rights and royalties to music were taken from the original songwriter, and entire companies were taken over by the US government. Of course, the question of returning those seized assets to the original owners is debated. But now you know . .
