Lenovo Smart Clock Essential- Unboxing and Setup

But first things first- this is not a sponsored video, nor am I affiliated with Lenovo (duh) or any seller. I paid for this out of my own pocket and this is my honest review.

Today I'm checking out the Lenovo Smart Clock Essential- NOT to be confused with the original Lenovo Smart Clock. This one is almost identical with the exception of a touch screen display.


I love my original smart clock, but I wasn't using the display. While it can be nice to look at, it doesn't add too much functionality and most of the time I was using my phone to control it. So I figured I'd try to save $15 and get the cheaper version.

** important note: if you have the nest doorbell, the original Smart Clock gives you the added functionality of acting as a peephole. So if you have a ring doorbell, that one is better.

The Essential does just about everything the original can (besides being a photo frame and being able to interact with the nest doorbell). It can still tell you your commute and your daily briefing, it can still play music and cast off your phone, it's still an assistant.

There are 2 things I think it does better than the original clock in my opinion.

1) Being a clock. Everything is easier to read. If you're a little older or if (like me) you struggle with your vision, this one is a much better buy.

2) Being a night light. The night light on this is fantastic and makes it look very sleek. It's easy to activate (hold down the minus button) and can be much more pleasant than the "night light" on the original clock.

Overall, if you can live without the display on the original smart clock and still want to add Google assistant to your home, this is a great option. I'd definitely recommend this over the nest mini (or google home mini). The speaker on this is great and it does a great job of picking up voice commands.
