Best Paper for Pastel Pencils

Discover the best paper for pastel pencil drawings so you can get a realistic finish! Choosing the right pastel paper is so important and will help you to create better pastel pencil drawings. The right pastel paper will reduce pastel pencils smudging and give you much better control.

I use: Clairfontiane Pastelmat Paper and Clairefontaine Pastelmat board.

Finding the right paper for pastel pencils can be hard, but try this stuff and see what you think! You'll notice loads of pastel pencils artists use pastelmat and it helps create better pastel pencil drawings. The pastelmat has a thicker tooth to the card which allows it to hold the layers of pastel more easily!

You can get this paper for pastels as a card (board) or paper (sheets). The paper is what you get in a pad that has a selection of colours. I would recommend Pastelmat paper for beginners as it's cheaper, however, the board will give you the option of laying down more pastel for complex pastel pencil drawings.
