How Does A Sand Battery Work? In 2021, Russian oil accounted nearly 40% of Europe’s gas imports, and 14% of the world's total supply. With gas prices rising astronomically during the Russia’s war on Ukraine, many countries have expidiated the process of using renewable energies instead of traditional fossil fuels.

In The United States, Biden has secured funding for over 500,000 EV chargers to be placed along the highway at the cost of $7.5 billion dollars. In Germany, 49% of their energy in 2022 came from renewable sources. Other countries are getting creative as well.

In July of 2022, Finnish researchers installed the world's first fully working "sand battery" which can store green power for months at a time. The developers say this could solve the problem of year-round supply, a major issue for green energy. Using low-grade sand, the device is charged up with heat made from cheap electricity from solar or wind. The sand stores the heat at around 500C, which can then warm homes in winter when energy is more expensive.
