"Skin In The Game was written when right wing extremism came to infiltrate the minds of every day people in a small, Canadian, rural area and turn on the LGBTQ+ community. A drag story hour was cancelled. A community rallied and held it anyway in the streets, in the snow. It was beautiful. A man tried to drive into the crowd and hit my wife. It was horrifying.

This song is about the immediate infighting that ensues on the left as we tried to figure out how to respond. When we’re scared and in pain it’s easier to turn on the people around us than to stand up to our oppressors. They count on that.

Everyone has a role in the struggle. Everyone has a different perspective and way of thinking. We need to have room for each other now, as every one of us has value in the struggle against the right wing extremism that is our new normal. this is not normal

Our differences and diversity in this struggle is our strength. As the government continues target us at our identities - remember that it’s a tool to keep us separate. Individualizing our struggles is the oldest trick.

No more respectability politics. No more Oppression Olympics. No more cutting each other down on the left when we could be holding each other through and making room for others to be here.

This struggle is not yours to face alone, nor is it mine, nor is it my neighbors. We are truly in this shit together. May our collective pain be the fuel in our struggle for freedom.
