(17 May 2014) African, European and US officials met on Saturday in Paris to decide on a strategy to combat the Islamist extremist group, Boko Haram, whose reach extends to five countries.
At the summit, which is also aimed at coordinating efforts to find and rescue almost 300 schoolgirls being held hostage by the group, intelligence officials shared information while heads of state and top diplomats tackled policy.
Hours after yet another attack in a Boko Haram stronghold - this time in Cameroon near the border with Nigeria - the leaders agreed to improve the policing of frontiers, to share intelligence, and to trace the weapons and cash that are the group's lifeblood.
Meanwhile in central Paris, former French First lady and journalist Valerie Trierweiler joined protesters in demanding the safe return of the girls.
