People often think the strict Victorian mourning etiquettes apply to the Regency era, but those traditions came along after Queen Victoria went into mourning for Prince Albert in the 1860s.

While some etiquette books in the early 1800s gave instructions about mourning clothing and the lengths of time people were expected to mourn, if you look at journals, letters, and novels from the time, it becomes clear that such standards weren’t universal. It varied from family to family and was considered a very personal decision.

Clothing and fabric were extremely expensive in the Regency era, so putting together a whole wardrobe for mourning was something most people couldn't afford. By the mid-Victorian era, clothing was much cheaper, making mourning clothes more commonplace, and when Queen Victoria went into such rigid mourning, it became the fashion to show one's mourning more overtly. Then, it was expected that you would dress in certain colors for specific lengths of time, depending on how closely related you were to the deceased.
