Compassion and War

In this video, I introduce the incredible story of William Broyles, an American soldier during the Vietnam War, and how his experience reveals the power of compassion, even in the most intense situations. This story comes from the documentary Faces of the Enemy, which was released nearly 40 years ago but is still deeply relevant today.

The documentary explores how we dehumanize one another in times of conflict and yet, how we can rediscover our shared humanity. In this clip, Broyles recalls when he entered a narrow, pitch-black tunnel to plant explosives, only to sense the presence of someone else inside. What happens next is astonishing—and reveals the profound connection we all share, even in the midst of war.
