Karnataka HC to Hear Vijay Mallya’s Plea on Bank Dues Sept 15

The Karnataka High Court has listed for hearing on September 15 a petition filed by liquor baron Vijay Mallya seeking clarity on the remaining debt amount claimed by banks.

Mallya, along with United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL) director Daljit Mahal, has approached the court asking banks to provide an updated statement of accounts. The petitions seek details of the outstanding dues, including accumulated interest, recoveries made, and credit for payments since April 2017, when the Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) issued its updated recovery certificate.

Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya, representing Mallya, argued that Kingfisher Airlines and UBHL had already been ordered to wind up, with the order confirmed by the Supreme Court. He contended that banks had already recovered more than the dues, yet recovery actions were continuing against Mallya.

Poovayya pointed out that while the DRT had fixed the repayment at ₹6,200 crore, the recovery officer had admitted that over ₹10,200 crore had been realised. He also cited Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s statement in Parliament that nearly ₹14,000 crore had been recovered.

The petitioners have demanded that banks issue comprehensive recovery statements, disclose assets used to settle the debt, and identify properties still in bank custody but not adjusted against the loans.

As interim relief, they have sought a stay on further recovery proceedings, including fresh auctions of assets under the 2017 DRT recovery certificate.
