This is the first proper mission of MGR. We now have access to a new, shiny, fully upgraded Raiden. Well, he's fully upgraded for me. Normally you'd have to spend BP to learn new moves and such. I like to have his full moveset at my disposal however, so we're rolling with this. But I'm going to avoid using weapons and abilities that Raiden gains until he'd normally have them in the story.
So Raiden has a lot of moves to take advantage of, but they're all pretty easy to get a hang of. Different combinations of Square and Triangle do all of his combos, such as SSSS TTTTT STTTT TSTTT etc. He can also do directional inputs for attacks and hold buttons to do a quickdraw with the sword or a launching attack. If you've played other action games, this will all come very naturally.
Raiden also has access to a lot of sub weapons, such as grenades or rocket launchers. He can use these to do some one off attacks until he expends the ammo. They can be useful in certain situations but I generally try to avoid using them. You can also use some of the items to help stealth. Yes, stealth is an option in this game. It's nowhere near as in depth as your average MGS game, but it's useful if you can take out even one enemy before an encounter. Taking them all out using stealth usually gets praise from your allies too. Stealth always triggers instant kills, so it's very effective whenever you can pull it off.
The other most notable feature about this game is the Zandatsu mechanic. Now, Raiden can expend the blue bar below his HP to use Blade Mode. Against weak enemies or enemies that have taken significant damage you can press L1 to use Blade Mode. A square is located on them, usually in the center, which Raiden can use to slash the enemy's spine and claim it. He can then crush it to fully recharge his HP and BM. This is how you keep going in combat and it's VERY satisfying. There will be other times against bosses where the Blade Mode symbol appears and this means to press L1 to slash them up, much like what happened against MG RAY.
23:34 - LQ-84i - This is doggo here is a sort of sub boss. He's not too terribly difficult as he only has a few attacks to take advantage of. Namely a 3-hit combo with his chainsaw. He can also throw knives as he jumps away from you, and perform a series of lunging attacks. One of them can be a grab, but you can parry all of it.
Early on in the fight, LQ-84i will summon allies to help. First he'll call a group of 3 cyborgs that are easily dispatched and can be used to recover via Zandatsu. He'll do this again towards the end of the fight, but this time summon a Gekko. Harder to deal with, but still Zandatsu material. Once his HP has lowered enough, you can trigger a QTE to let you use Blade Mode to slice him to ribbons.
1:00:57 - Mistral - The final boss for this stage is Mistral. She's one of the easiest bosses in the game, but she's fun to fight. You can generally fight her straight forwardly, by slashing away at her and parrying her attacks. Once you deal enough damage to her, you can Blade Mode to slice off her robot arms and destroy her staff. Then she'll begin smashing you over the head with Tripods, replenishing her arms with them, or retreat to higher ground to lob them at you and then come back fully armed.
She triggers another phase by grabbing you and moving you both to a pipe. Then the fight is on a 2D plane, but isn't much different. After that, the combat area moves once more. If you notice, her hair actually comes down for this part. She gains some stronger attacks in this phase, such as some long range slamming attacks with her staff that have her travel quite a ways. She also has all of her initial moves at her disposal, in addition to all the Tripods everywhere. Lower her HP enough, and you can trigger a QTE and a Blade Mode to take her out. Doing so will unlock her weapon for Raiden, which is really fun to use.
