The complexities of biomedical science today, and the challenges associated with translation of this science to addressing problems in human health and disease, can stretch the resources, financial and intellectual, of individual scientists, laboratories and even institutions. To address our most vexing questions, teams of scientists, engineers, physicians, entrepreneurs and industrialists must define new models of interactions which synergize the talents and perspectives of each, while providing rewards appropriate to incentivize individual initiative in each domain. Taking examples from the arena of biomedical imaging and specifically brain mapping, this presentation will discuss the essential elements of successful models, and highlight the achievements associated with each group, and how they integrate to create new capabilities. The impact of such work on basic science, medical practice, and society more broadly will be discussed.
