Minimal & Strong by Lauren Smyth

In 2019 I had a lot ideas for choreography. Thankfully a group of beautiful girls were willing to help me bring some of my visions to life! Over the course of 8 weeks we met just once or twice a week to try out different ideas. It was one of the biggest learning experiences of my life. It really challenged me when it came to thinking about formations as I was mostly used to choreographing for just 1 person.

After a lot of blood, sweat & tears we were finally in a position to film my 3 pieces. One Friday night in The Liffey Trust Studios in Dublin we got to work & come midnight we were still filming! From losing our balance & making mistakes, to laying the marley ourselves & perhaps getting in trouble for overstaying our block of time in the studio, we had such a laugh & made memories to last a lifetime. I just loved the energy of the whole experience & I can't wait to recreate more like it in the near future.

In this piece I wanted to showcase the power of female dancers in a minimal & strong way. This Slip Jig piece requires so much precision, poise & control.

I can't thank Aideen O'Connell, Eimear O'Connell, Aoife Galvin, Aoife Healy, Cara Gaynor, Ellen Tolan & Orla Kernan enough for their time & patience!

Thank you to Iain Mackay for the haunting Slip Jig music!
